What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat infections. It belongs to the drug class tetracyclines & miscellaneous antimalarials as it is used to treat malaria. It checks infection by preventing the growth & spread of bacteria.
Uses of Doxycycline
Doxycycline treats various infections caused by bacteria like infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract infections, infections of the skin, and eyes infections caused by ticks, mites, lice, other infected animals like anthrax & plague, or from contaminated edibles such as food poisoning.
Along with additional medicines, it is also used to treat acne. It can also treat sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, etc.
How to take Doxycycline?
Take Doxycycline as prescribed by the doctor. Repeat the dose as advised. Do not overdose on it. It is available in the form of capsules. Swallow the tablet with about 50-80ml of water. Taking additional fluids is advised during this medication.
It is usually prescribed on an empty stomach or 1-2 hours before a meal.
Doxycycline can be taken along with food also depending upon the treatment. The instructions for medication are printed on the back of the leaflet. It varies with the brand name.
If you are unable to swallow the complete capsule, you can break it & mix the medicine with the applesauce to make swallowing easier. If the capsule or tablet is the delayed-release one, swallow it completely as a whole. Do not break it.
The medicine is also available in liquid form. The dosing is measured in the syringe provided or in the medicine cup or special dose-measuring spoon.
It is also available in injections. It is injected into a vein only when the patient is unable to take the drug orally.
Dosage
The dosage of Doxycycline is decided by the doctor based on age & requirement. You can also follow the dosage written on the brands. But do not change the dose advised by your doctor.
The amount of medicine prescribed depends upon the following factors:
- Strength of the drug
- Repetition of the dose
- The time interval between the doses
- Course of medication
“Do not double the dose if missed “. In case of a missed dose, either take it early as soon as you remember or avoid the dose & take the next dose at a consistent time.
Side Effects
Like all other medications, the side effects of Doxycycline also range from mild to severe. If the following side effects do not disappear within a short time, consult your doctor immediately.
- Allergic reactions – Skin rashes, itching, swelling, etc.
- Sore throat
- Dysphagia
- Burning in eyes
- Stomachache
- Water or bloody diarrhea
- Pain in the chest, arrhythmia, dyspnoea
- Fever & chills
- Bodyache
- Reduced no. of white blood cells, weakness
- Nausea, vomiting
- Headache & dizziness
- Upset stomach, loss of appetite
- Darkened color of skin
- Itching & discharge from the vagina
- Discoloration of teeth in adult
This list does not include all the side effects. Side effects other than this may also occur. Consult your doctor immediately if any of these side effects persist.
Drugs Interactions
Doxycycline should be taken on prescription after the physician knows all the other medications you have been taking as several medicines can interact with Buy Doxycycline to cause side effects. Precautions for Doxycycline
Do not take any other antibiotics along with Doxycycline.

Do not store the drug in moist places. store the medicine at room temperature away from straight sunlight.

Do not self-medicate. Always consume the drug only if prescribed.
Do not use laxatives, vitamins, or supplements within 2 hours of taking this tablet.
Your consultant should be aware of all the medicines that you have been taking or are taking.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had stomach surgery, yeast infection on any orifice, lupus, intracranial hypertension, or any other disease.
Doxycycline should not be taken if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman. It can be fatal to the fetus.
